What is an Art Teacher?

A two-part series with art teachers on their journey into learning to teach in different environments, while maintaining their artistic practice. 

This series titled 'What is an Art Teacher?' brings into conversation art teachers from across the UK as they dissect our understanding of traditional learning spaces and discuss what it takes to be an art teacher – with topics ranging from navigating the societal de-valuation of art as a 'soft subject', and the camaraderie and impact of having a supportive teacher-body, to proposals into how designing spaces of learning collaboratively can lead to new, generative ways of teaching and learning.

Part I: Why be an Art Teacher?

Chaired by Andy Berriman (Head of Art at Rydens School), with Stephanie Cubbin (Head of Art at St Marylebone School), Kate Thackara (NQT Art Teacher), and Tindara Sidoti-McNary (PGCE student).

Part II: The Art Teacher as an Artist

Chaired by Lesley Burgess (Senior Lecturer at IoE/UCL), with Dr Marq Smith (IoE/UCL), Tom Jones (IoE/UCL), Damien O’Gorman (NQT Art Teacher), and Jennifer Johnson (PGCE student).

And it's something where students need to understand that there's more to art than just observational drawing. 

There's photography, there's building stuff with your hands, there's thinking about conceptual art, there's textiles, there's so many things out there and squeezing all of that into curriculum. I think the first thing we've gotta go is the cut in half Pepper.

About the talks

This series of talks originally took place as part of OCCUPATION, a three-day symposium at Tate Exchange organised by Freelands Foundation in collaboration with the Institute of Education(IOE) and University College London(UCL) in 2017. OCCUPATION featured an installation of those undertaking the initial teacher education course (PGCE) in Art & Design, studying to become secondary school art teachers. Panel discussions, workshops and film screenings explored the way we understand spaces for learning.
